FAQ

So…what is a GreenShield?

A GreenShield is an airfoil that attaches to the front of the roof of a school bus.

What’s it made of?

Our current GreenShield: V4 is made of fiberglass and epoxy resin. And it’s painted yellow to match the school bus.

What kind of savings are we talking about?

GreenShield: V4 increases gas mileage from 10-20%. This saves at least $600 per bus, per year. Multiply that by the 480,000 school buses driving across the US every day, and that’s a lot of savings. These test results are from virtual wind simulation and live bus testing.

Where do you run these tests?

Stacy Benjamin at the Northwestern University Segal Design Institute is the project manager who has helped Jonny since GreenShields won the $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. Northwestern is where we develop and test GreenShields prototypes.

Who wants to buy GreenShields?

Mr. John Benish, Jr., owner of the Cook-Ilinois Bus Company, contacted GreenShields and generously donated use of his buses for testing. He’s lined up to buy GreenShields for his 4300 bus fleet as soon as they’re on the market. We’ve also been contacted by California, Idaho and Texas for GreenShields.

Who’s helping you guys out?

GreenShields is very grateful for the support we’ve received—we wouldn’t be anywhere close to where we are today without it. GreenShields is supported by Ashoka’s Youth Venture and GenerationOn, organizations that help young social entrepreneurs make their dreams for social good a reality.
